Mind, Body & Soul

Seems like a really heavy title huh? πŸ˜‚ Don't worry I am not going to blabber on about how to change your life in this new year. I'm not into that whole "new year, new me" crap!
I am however, trying to focus more on taking care of myself in this new year. I tend to let myself fall behind on self care as the year moves on and we get busier. Basically, from September to January was a complete whirlwind and I started this year off feeling burnt out and overwhelmed. I was unorganized, tired and unmotivated. I realized this was most likely due to the fact that I had been concerned with everyone else but me. And the holidays just do a number on all of us, between shooting and mailing Christmas cards, baking treats for neighbors and preparing to be Santa, I was just D.O.N.E. So my goal for the beginning of this year is to refresh myself and take time back for me.

Some things I am doing to help achieve my goal:

GET ORGANIZEDI am purging all of our unused stuff or clothes we no longer wear. Being able to let go of the old is such a relieving feeling. I also purchased a new planner from May Designs that I am hoping will encourage me to be better about writing things down and staying on track. I am notorious for buying planners at the beginning of the year and then forgetting to use them or getting overwhelmed with filling them out. So I chose this May Designs planner because of it's simplicity. I'll have a post coming soon dedicated to my planner choice & how I set it up😊
TAKE MORE 'ME' TIME - This is a big one because it's essentially what my entire goal is about. I am going to require myself to step away and take some more alone time. Whether it's taking a hot bath with a bath bomb or roaming the aisles of Target, or visiting a Thrift Store on my own. I need to realize that I am at my best when I am able to take those times to just be ME. Not a mom, a wife, a cook, a maid, a teacher, just plain old Mandi. Otherwise, I get easily frustrated and overwhelmed which doesn't help my boys either.
READ - I genuinely love to read, always have. But as life moves on and I find myself with less and less free time, it gets pushed to the back. Instead, its easier for me to plop down on the couch after a busy day and aimlessly scroll through my Instagram feed. I have found that that leaves me feeling unsatisfied and empty. I mean, in doing that what have I really accomplished? Have I learned anything? Nope. So in my attempt to take better care of myself, I want to also feed & fuel my mind. I thought it'd be fun to share with y'all the books I am excited to take on and the one's I hope will help me grow this year.

Breathe Mama Breathe

I am so excited to start this one because it is about taking time for mindfulness but for busy moms! Which means each mindfulness exercise takes only about 5 minutes, hallelujah. Here's a quick synopsis:
Easy-to-follow practices that will help moms find quick, daily opportunities to reset and refocus with mindfulness
Moms can feel as if they are sprinting through life, crashing onto the pillow at day’s end only to start again the next morning. In Breathe, Mama, Breathe, psychotherapist Shonda Moralis outlines the benefits of daily meditation and shows moms how to do it—in just five minutes! Plus, she shares over 60 “mindful breaks” that will help moms tune into their own well-being (along with everyone else’s):

  • Eat a mindful breakfast—with no phone, TV, or newspaper!
  • Cuddle your child and take three deep breaths together.
  • Give yourself a mindful-mommy high five—because moms can use positive reinforcement, too.
Every mom—whether caring for a new baby, an overscheduled grade-schooler, or an angsty teen—can become a mindful mama!
Another reason I am so excited about starting this book is because one of my favorite bloggers is doing a "book club" via Instagram and reading this book. There will be small discussions, and it will be fun to have a community to read it alongside.  You can read more about that here.

You can purchase the book via Amazon (whoo! 2 day shipping!) here.

Looking forward to this one because I really need to get back into my groove of setting aside time to connect with God. I am a Christian, and I have spent most of my adult life trying to figure out how to build a relationship with Him. I went through some trials as a teen & young adult that tested me and my faith. I even neglected it altogether. But after many years, I've realized that in order to heal and grow, I need to continue to pursue my faith. It is extremely hard to find the time to sit down and actually take the time to focus, so a guided and simple devotional is what works best for me in this season of life. I have tried so many and am excited for this one because it is 1 devotional a day, easy peasy and I can take that special time while I drink my morning cup of coffee.

Here is a quick synopsis:

God is bigger than your current story. Bigger than fear or shame or that voice in your head that whispers that you are not enough, too broken, or too flawed. Join Him in a closer relationship—one rooted in truth and Unshakeable. In this daily devotional Christine Caine encourages you to find confidence to live as the person God created you to be.
Everything in our world that can be shaken will be shaken. And yet, the Bible assures us it doesn’t matter what happens politically, morally, socially, or economically in the world around us if we have Christ in us—if we have the kingdom of God within us—because His kingdom is Unshakeable.
In this daily devotional, bestselling author, speaker and activist Christine Caine will take you on a year-long journey of building your faith in our Unshakeable God. Through inspiring personal stories and powerful scriptures, she will equip you to live boldly and courageously, fully trusting our faithful God. She will inspire you how to activate living your life on mission. Unstoppable. Undaunted. Unashamed. Unshakable.
“All of creation will be shaken and removed, so that only unshakable things will remain.”
–Hebrews 12:27 NLT

Mama Natural Guide to Pregnancy & Childbirth

I am really looking forward to this one because it really aligns with my use of essential oils and natural remedies in my pregnancy. If you don't already, you can follow along with my essential oil Instagram account @mandihartessentials. I am over halfway through my pregnancy already but I have been in a lot of physical pain recently and think this book will be a great resource to have on hand as the weeks move on & I get bigger! Plus, I am looking forward to learning all I can about how to prepare my body for labor and delivery. I didn't "prepare" my body for labor with Ryker and I am hoping that by doing so this time around I will have a less strenuous recovery!

Here is a quick synopsis:
For the last half-century, control over childbirth has been in favor of doctors. Many pregnancy guidebooks are conventional, fear-based, or written by male physicians deeply entrenched in the medical model of birth.

But change is underway. A groundswell of women are taking back their pregnancy and childbirth and embracing a natural way. Genevieve Howland, the woman behind the enormously popular Mama Natural blog and YouTube channel, has created an inspiring, fun, and informative guide that demystifies natural pregnancy and walks mom through the process one week at a time.

The Mama Natural's Week-by-Week Guide to Pregnancy and Childbirth is the modern (and yet ancient) approach to pregnancy and childbirth. "Natural" recognizes that pregnancy and birth are normal, and that having a baby is a wondrous biological process and rite of passage--not a medical condition. This book draws upon the latest research showing how beneficial and life-changing natural birth is for both babies and moms.

Full of weekly advice and tips for a healthy pregnancy, Howland details vital nutrition to take, natural remedies for common and troublesome symptoms, as well as the appropriate (and inappropriate) use of interventions.

Peppered throughout are positive birth and pregnancy stories from women of all backgrounds (and all stages of their natural journey) along with advice and insights from a Certified Nurse Midwife (CNM) plus a Registered Nurse (RN), doula, and lactation consultant. Encouraging, well-researched, and fun, The Mama Natural's Week-by-Week Guide to Pregnancy and Childbirth will be an essential companion for women everywhere to embrace natural pregnancy and reap all the benefits for both baby and mama.
Doesn't that sound awesome!? Such an incredible resource for a pregnant mama! I think it'd be an amazing gift for any pregnant friends as well! Definitely something I'll be giving out to congratulate any expectant friends of mine😍
