Essential Oil Birth Toolkit

One of the things I am most excited about labor this go around is having my essential oils to support me! We've been using essential oils in our daily lives for the past almost two years and have experienced so many benefits from utilizing them. I've been using essential oils to support my body during this pregnancy as well! I've shared a majority of my favorites over on my essentials instagram page if you'd like to know more on my pregnancy favorites (check under the hashtag #kmepregnancyessentials). Over the past couple of months, I've been compiling a list of oils and roller recipes I want to have with me in the delivery room and I have finally gathered together my "essential oil birthing toolkit" so I thought it'd be fun to share it here with you guys! I am also bringing my diffuser along so I can diffuse oils in the hospital room to create a more soothing vibe and remind me of the comforts of home. I made sure to check with my midwife and my hospital ahead of time to see if bringing my diffuser would be alright and thankfully, they said absolutely! So my advice to you is to double check with where you'll be delivering to make sure they allow diffusers & essential oils in the delivery room, all hospitals and birthing places are different.

Okay, onto the fun stuff!

As I said, I'm definitely bringing my diffuser with me to the hospital so I can diffuse oils that support me emotionally as well as create an environment that reminds me more of home which is sure to soothe me in such a high stress time. The oils I am packing to diffuse are my personal favorites such as: Peppermint, Orange, Frankincense, Stress Away, Release & Gentle Baby. These are all oils I diffuse regularly and love so I am excited to utilize the emotional support of these oils during labor as well. I even made up a list of diffuser combinations for Michael to refer to since I will be preoccupied! Some of the ones I listed are:

This roller blend was recommended in my favorite resource book for using essential oils during pregnancy and with babies & kiddos, called Gentle Babies. It has been my holy grail during this pregnancy and I highly recommend it for any expecting mamas! Just a heads up, this roller blend should NOT be used until the body is already in active labor. It can be used to support steady contractions and keep labor from stalling. I'll apply it to my inner ankle, on my big toes, along my back and wrists.

During my labor with Ryker my contractions were so strong that they made me incredibly nauseous, to the point that I was sick to my stomach with each one. I am determined to have a different experience this time so I am definitely bringing along my trusty Tummy blend roller to support my stomach. This blend is one we use regularly at our house for any kind of tummy upsets so it's just a good one to have on hand for delivery just in case.

Something that no one ever tells you about giving birth: the afterbirth contractions. YUP! You're not done with contractions one you give birth ladies. When you breastfeed your uterus contracts in order to bring it back down to its original size. Therefore, each time you nurse your newborn, you have to endure mild to moderate contractions. I've also read that they get worse with each baby you have😅 yikes! So I am preparing myself for those afterbirth contractions with this trusty roller blend I read can help ease the pain.

This one was a no brainer! I use this roller every day for emotional support and perfume. I absolutely adore the way that it smells and it is always able to relax me when I am feeling stressed. I knew that I needed to have it in my birth toolkit just in case!

Stress Away essential oil is a combination of Lime, Vanilla, Copaiba, Cedarwood, Ocotea and Lavender.

Another no brainer! And it's pretty obvious due to the name as to why. This oil is amazing support for mamas and babies, it was designed specifically for expectant mothers and newborn babies. It is comforting, soothing and relaxing. It may help relieve stress during pregnancy and can be highly beneficial during the birthing process. I plan to diffuse it during our recovery to promote bonding between me and baby bro, as well as to support feelings of calm for the little babe since being in the bright, big world is kind of scary. It also smells amazing and will definitely make the hospital room feel more like home!

Gentle Baby essential oil is a combination of Rosewood, Geranium, Palmarosa, Lavender, Roman Chamomile, Ylang Ylang, Lemon, Jasmine, Bergamot & Rose.

I definitely plan to breastfeed this little babe and need all of the support I can get! I was able to breastfeed Ryker for almost two months of his life but unfortunately couldn't produce what he needed and we ended our journey with formula which was the best call for us. You can read more about my breastfeeding journey here. Although I don't regret our decision for formula with Ryker, I do wish our time nursing lasted longer so I am excited for a do-over with this little one! I am also excited to have better support and knowledge of breastfeeding this go around as well. Fennel is definitely going to support me during my nursing journey this go around so I am bringing it with me to the hospital to apply between nursing sessions to aid my body in bringing in my milk.

This is a powerful blend of oils that may aid in the letting go of negative emotions so one can progress in a more effective and efficient way, it can also help release frustration. Birth is an intimidating, humbling and somewhat frustrating experience at times. Having this blend to support my emotions naturally is going to be a total game changer. I vividly remember pleading with everyone that "I can't do this", when I was in labor with Ryker. I think that having this oil blend to help me release those negative emotions will help my labor progress and aid my body in relaxing into the contractions that will bring my baby into the world.

Release essential oil is a combination of Ylang Ylang, Lavandin, Geranium and Sandalwood.

Oh Frank! If you only pack one oil in your birth toolkit, this one is it! It smells amazing and can be used for darn near anything and everything. We love it for immune, emotional and skin support. I plan to diffuse it during our stay, most likely paired with Gentle Baby, as well as to apply to sweet little man's head when he is born as a sign of protection (otherwise referred to as anointing). It can also be applied to the vaginal area after transition to eliminate the "ring of fire" feeling. I also love that Frankincense was one of the oils that was brought as a gift to Mary & Jesus after His birth, the symbolism in having it with me for my own birth is something so precious.

And there you have it! That's a look inside my essential oil toolkit! I currently have these oils stashed away in a cute carry case so they can easily be grabbed and tossed into my hospital bag before we leave. I also have my spare diffuser packed away in my hospital bag so I don't forget it! I have truly seen the benefits of using essential oils first hand so adding them to such a personal and life changing experience was an easy decision to make. I couldn't imagine not having them to support me in every way! If you want to learn more about getting started with essential oils you can learn more here.
